First, there’s only one of me—not six—and I’m not an MD. However, I have always been interested in matters of health, and now in the middle of my life, I find myself embarking on a new career as a healthcare provider. I spend a lot of time reading about diet, exercise, and other lifestyle factors related to health, and I want to relay that information to my patients and clients. So, at the same time I was gearing up to start my business, I decided to start a blog as a complement to my acupuncture and massage therapy practice. It’s been almost a year, but I’m finally posting.

I hope that this blog will educate and stimulate others, as well as myself, so that together we can create health and vitality in our lives. With that goal in mind, I brainstormed for a blog name. I wanted something that encompassed my belief that lifestyle is the greatest determinant of our health, and that most of the chronic disease we see in our culture is at least preventable, if not curable. I found this poem on the web.

“The best six doctors anywhere
And no one can deny it
Are sunshine, water, rest, and air Exercise and diet.
These six will gladly you attend
If only you are willing
Your mind they’ll ease
Your will they’ll mend
And charge you not a shilling.”

~ Nursery rhyme quoted by Wayne Fields, What the River Knows, 1990

With that, bestsixdoctors.com was born. I hope that I can do it justice. Keep in mind that I’m not a medical doctor, a nutritionist, or a therapist, so what you will find here is not medical advice, but information and my current thoughts. I have been known to change my mind with new information, and with any luck I’ll get some readers to help me with that process. I’m also not suggesting that you fire your doctor, only that if we want to be healthy, fit, and happy, we should all educate ourselves as best we can about how to achieve those things.
